20 Things Every Woman Should Do Before She Gets Married

20 Things Every Woman Should Do Before She Gets MarriediStockphoto

With 11 days left until my wedding, the final countdown is in effect. Among the dozens of little things left on my to-do list, I’ve been thinking a lot about the things crossed off my to-do list long before I met my husband to-be — things that have made me a well-rounded, experienced woman ready for a lifetime commitment to another person. After the jump, 20 things every woman should cross off her list before getting married.

  1. Live by herself for at least a year.
  2. Live with someone else for at least a year.
  3. Recover from a broken heart.
  4. Have a vacation fling.
  5. Take a road-trip with a group of girlfriends.
  6. Relish sleeping in a queen-sized bed by herself.
  7. Get her finances in order.
  8. Learn to love her body.
  9. Have sex with at least one person she’d never want to marry (or introduce to mom).
  10. Find reliable birth control.
  11. Pay off as much credit card debt and student loans as possible.
  12. Spend way too much on a something frivolous.
  13. Exorcise all past relationship demons.
  14. Travel somewhere exotic.
  15. Establish a strong circle of friends.
  16. Forgive her parents for not being perfect.
  17. Have at least one night she can’t quite remember.
  18. Experience some really bad first dates.
  19. Find hobbies that fulfill her.
  20. Celebrate her 25th birthday.

My results:
1. Not Check. I was hoping to do that this year, but money did not cooperate.
2. Check. Thank you MSU housing!
3. Check. Unfortunately.
4. Not Check. I've always been on vacation with family or Clay, which are not situations conducive to a vacation fling.
5. Check! Chicago will never be the same, nor will the Western Kentucky Parkway.
6. Maybe check? This one is a bit tricky. When I was little, I had my parents' old bed, which, to me, was huge! But it could've just been a full. I've also been sleeping on a full for a while now, which is almost a queen size.
7. Not Check. I don't have any finances to get in order really, so I guess that means I need to save up some money.
8. Almost Check. I like my body a lot, but there are still things I wish I could change.
9. Check.
10. Expensive Check.
11. Check! Because I have none! Hooray!
12. Check. Usually for me, this means clothing...
13. Not Check. There are still some boys I'd like to slap just once for closure.
14. Check! And I'd love to go back, and might do so in 2012?
15. Almost Check. My friend circle has changed a lot during the past four years, but I think I'm starting to build a new one that I like so much better.
16. Check. But that doesn't mean they don't frustrate me sometimes.
17. Check? I can't remember! lol.
18. SUPER CHECK. E.g., Dairy Queen guy, Creepy Racer Band Guy(s), Agricultureish Guy...
19. Almost Check. Reading is one of my favorite hobbies, but I would love to get into scrapbooking.
20. Not Check. Number 22 comes next week though!

Ok, let's sum up.
Out of 20 items, I have 11 Check's (or some variant of), 3 Almost Check's, 1 Maybe Check, and 5 Not Check's. According to this list, I am not ready to get married.

Good thing no one's proposed!

-Went to a foreign country with no one I knew, and made a real friend
-Watched the fireworks on New Year's Eve in London, England
-Navigated huge airports by myself without completely freaking out.
-Crawled on my stomach and knees in a cave for 6 hours, having to face some of my biggest fears (closed-in spaces a mile below the earth, and heights), WITH MY DAD.
-Laughed until I cried with the people I cherish most in the world: my mother, father, and younger brother
-Worked my butt off through college so I can graduate with my bachelor's degree (and hopefully my master's) without any debt.
-Learn the value of saving money
-Fallen in love a few times, and discovered what real, true love is all about (I love you Clay)
-Taken a road trip with friends
-Taken a picture with the Naked Cowboy of NYC
-Stood on top of the Empire State Building
-Stood on the edge of the ocean and Lake Michigan and let the waves crash over my feet.
-Worked incredibly hard to accomplish a goal (marching band in high school, my senior thesis, producing VDAY)
-Stayed up all night talking
-Watched "Pride and Prejudice", "The Producers", and "V for Vendetta" more times than I can count with the people who count the most
-Graduated from college
-Stood up for myself when others try to bring me down
-Hiked to the top of a mountain
-Walked behind a waterfall
-Made cookies FROM SCRATCH
-Sing in my car with the windows down

These are just a few of the things I love about my life. I don't have to go parasailing or skydiving to feel like my life is complete. I just need to know that the people I love know that I love them.

OMG! IT'S FINALLY HAPPENED!

  • Jul. 30th, 2009 at 7:57 AM

I have been ASKED to update!!  See? I knew somebody kept up with this thing!

Normally, I would've updated by now, but this week has been super busy at work. Usually, here in the lovely Recruitment Office in Sparks Hall, there are two student workers, myself and Adam. The student workers give the super-exciting and fun-filled campus tours to prospective students and their families. Because there are only two of us student workers, we only have two tours that go out every day: one at 10:30am and one at 1:00pm. Given the tours take at least an hour and a half to complete, that is about all our office has time to do. Normally, my job is not a hard job. At all. Basically, I sit at a computer, blog, facebook, twitter, answer phones, run basic office errands, and do basic office tasks. Not bad for $7.25 an hour (don't get excited; that's minimum wage!). This week, however, Adam is on vacation in Orlando, FL. While he is lounging on the beach and eating fabulous seafood (no jealousy here whatsoever), I get to do both of our jobs. (I really don't mind. He did it while I was on vacation in June.) But this week seems more hellacious than past weeks have been.

Monday I had to give three tours: one driving tour to a candidate for a position on campus, and two walking tours with several families. I spent about 4-5 hours out of the 8 I worked talking about Murray State, saying the same things over and over and over. ("This is Wrather Museum, this is the library, random funny joke or fun fact, OMGILOVEMURRAY!") Needless to say that when 4:00 came around, I didn't really want to talk much to anyone, just because my mouth and jaw were tired!

Tuesday, I gave four tours. Another driving tour to another candidate, two full walking tours, and when a walk-in came in just an hour before we closed, they wanted a full tour as well. They did NOT get a full tour. They saw the showroom we have in Hester, and I drove them past the buildings where their desired majors were located. I know, that doesn't sound that bad, but the walk-in was a group of 2 stuck-up, I-only-wear-super-short-shorts-and-tiny-little-tanks-from-Abercrombie-OMG high school seniors and their I-think-I'm-still-young-and-hip-and-cool stuck-up mothers. JOY!

Wednesday, I woke up with a migraine. (Seriously, my luck is awesome.) I got to work in time to give the morning tour, but the family had gotten there 2 hours early. By the time I got there, a couple of the admissions counselors had already taken them out on tour. I LOVE the people I work with. We are all like a big family. I gave the afternoon tour to just one girl and her mother. The girl was nice, but very quiet. Did not ask one single question. But that was almost ok. Her mom, on the other hand, did not really react to anything I said, never looked at me, and sniffed almost every tree and flower we walked by. Now, those of you who have attended MSU, which I think includes all of my readers, know that Murray has a shit-ton of greenery, shrubbery, and floral bushes to enjoy as you walk to class. That woman was sniffing nearly every single one! Hello?? Can you say CRAZY??

So today is Thursday. We have a big tour this morning (5 students and whatever family/friends they bring with them), and a smaller one this afternoon. I'll reserve judgment for later because to be honest, there's probably no telling what type of crazy will walk off the elevator today!

Let's try to make this entry about something other than work. This past weekend was nice. I went up to Owensboro Friday after work to spend the weekend with Clay. Friday night, we were eating yummy Coldstone ice cream with his friend Logan and Logan's girlfriend Stephanie, when Logan suggested watching a movie. "Like, a movie in the theater or renting one and watching it at home?", I innocently asked. Logan probably didn't realize what he had done when he said "either one" until I screamed "THE UGLY TRUTH!!" and Stephanie squealed in agreement. HAHA! The boyfriends got tricked into seeing the latest chick flick with Katherine Heigl and Gerard Butler (yummy). We just barely made it to the last showing, and it was so good! I mean, totally predictable, but so funny and flirty and sexy and fun. The boys didn't hate it either. I mean, c'mon! At one point it has two girls in bikinis wreslting in jello! (Girls, use this to get your man to see it with you!)

Saturday the plan was to go to Holiday world with Logan and Stephanie, but there was over a 50% chance of thunderstorms all day, so we decided not to risk it. We went up to Evansville to just kick around and hand out. We started off by going to a mini golf/laser tag/arcade place and played mini golf. I got third, which is definitely better than last! Then each couple played a game of air hockey, and of course, the boys got way too into it and had a Scrubs moment. (Seriously, follow the link given. Hilarious!) Since there's not much else to do in Evansville, we went to the mall like high school kids for a while, which wasn't bad. Then we went over to a comic book store that Clay and his friends frequent there. Now here, I must confess, I do like comic books. I've gotten into the X-Men series lately, but I've read some of Clay's too. While we were browsing around, I found a Pride and Prejudice comic! I def squealed a little! I didn't buy one because I couldn't find the first issue, but since I got Clay a subscription to Marvel online comics for our anniversary, I might use it and read them online. :)  We finished up the day at Old Chicago, a restaurant featuring Chicago-style pizza, and man, that stuff was delicious! I love love LOVE Chicago-style pizza when it's done right. <3

Sunday was just kind of a lazy day. Clay and I just hung around Owensboro until it was time for me to go home. Weekends with Clay are never particularly exciting (because of location), but I love the time I get to spend with him. I'd rather do nothing at all with him than be super-busy somewhere super-exciting.

In other news, because I'm not getting an apartment in Murray this fall, my dad is building me a room onto the back of our house. This is amazing because A) I technically don't have a room in my house anymore since my uncle moved in with us, B) I'll have somewhere to put my rug that I got from Rachael's giveaway! C) It'll be great to have my own space again.  My dad is really working hard to get it done in time for my birthday (September 1), and I couldn't ever thank him enough. He's really trying to get it done ASAP. And my mom and brother are helping a lot too. I love them all so much!

Ok, now to end with a funny story. The story takes place in Evansville as Clay and I are trying to locate the mini golf place that Logan and Stephanie are waiting for us at. We're stopped behind about 2 cars at a red light. To our right is a guy waiting to turn left onto the road we're on. As soon as the light turns green, the guy to our right pulls right out in front of us, across our lane, and starts heading the opposite direction. Of course, Clay hits the brakes he had started to ease up on and lays on the horn. The guy looks at us and immediately starts to get really angry, yelling and telling us "F*** YOU!" The guy drove on, and so did we. A few minutes later, Clay started talking about it. "I just can't figure out why he got so angry at us! HE pulled out in front of US!" and so on. "Well, Clay, " I said, "I kind of gave him the finger..."  "YOU DID WHAT???" Haha, whoops. What can I say? I have REALLY bad road rage. When another idiot makes some idiot decision that puts me, my passengers, and my car in danger, I get pissed! I mean, can you blame me? Needless to say, Clay did not appreciate my help in the matter. lol.

Ok, I gave you guys a nice long entry. Comments??

Hey guys. Not feeling much like being funny or smart or cute today. I had an unsettling night last night, and I just want to crawl back into bed and disappear for the day.

Despite my bummed attitude, I do have a relatively nice weekend ahead of me. The weather is supposed to be spectacularly wonderful. A high of 78 degrees. Hallelujah. Saturday morning my parents. brother and I are waking up obscenely early to drive the 4+ hours to Scottsboro, Alabama, to shop at the Unclaimed Baggage Store. I've been trying to go here for nearly 2 years. I'm so excited that we're finally going! If I make it back in time, I'm going to head out to Emily's Going-Away Party in Lone Oak/Mayfield/I don't actually know what town it's in. Maybe between the two. Anyway, if I don't get back in time, I'm going to try to take Em to dinner or a movie or something. I'm going to miss that girl so much! But at least we'll be able to see her facebook, flickr (or some other means of seeing pictures), blogs, and skype! The 10 months will fly by.

Other news... I'm saving up to get a new computer. A MacBook Pro, in fact. Sure, I think PCs are great, except for the fact that one virus can destroy a PC. Since that has already happened to me once, I am opting for a Mac this time around. Cristin swears by them, as well as other people, so I'm looking forward to my new toy. If I save and spend wisely, I should have it in time for the new semester. Hooray!

I'll be getting the 13" because I don't want a gigantic one, and this one would be slightly lighter for days that I need to carry it around.

Next weekend is Holiday World, which should be fun.
Tuesday is Harry Potter with my brother. :)

I am blessed, but I still feel depressed. Hopefully I can shake off this funk.

Sunshine on my shoulder makes me happy...

...too bad it's cloudy and foggy out.

WEEKEND RECAP:

I spent this weekend with the lovely Cristin Paige Laird in Memphis, Tennessee!  I left Murray as soon as I got off work at 3, and drove the lovely, easy trip to Memphis--NOT! Google Maps sucks. I am done with it. He is a lying buttface who doesn't know how to give directions. I got all the way to the Memphis area with barely a hiccup, but as soon as I get on the busy Memphis-traffic section of I-40, it screws me over. According to Google, I was supposed to stay on I-40 until Exit 7 for Highland Ave. But actually, that is not right. In order to get to THAT PARTICULAR exit 7, I would have needed to get OFF of I-40 onto Sam Cooper (Blvd?) and take exit 7 off of the SAM COOPER. Of course, I had never driven in Memphis before, so I followed Google Maps. After realizing my mistake (I-40 HAS NO exit 7), I called Cristin to see if she could navigate me to her. She told me to get off at the next exit and she would direct me from there. That next exit just so happened to be Hollywood Street, a not-so-nice area of Memphis. I asked Cristin just how bad the neighborhood I was in was, and she told me she'd tell me after I got to her house. YIKES. Apparently I was in the vicinity of Orange Mound, an area notorious for gang activity and crime. Nice work, Google Maps.  But Cristin brought me through the wilderness. Yes, I made it through. Didn't know how lost I was until I found you...

After trying to get there was over with, we had a lot of fun. I got there almost right at 6 pm. Definitely not bad timing at all! Even after touring Orange Mound. Cristin and I were both hungry at that point, so after I changed out of my gross tour-giving clothes, Cristin and I headed out. Then, Cristin got a call from her parents that they were going to eat at Buckley's and we were invited. Buckley's is a place known for it's filet, along with other ridiculously good food. Cristin and I went with her parents and her brother Preston and his girlfriend Alex. It was a very nice and fun dinner. Definitely a place I would like to go back to! After dinner and running a few errands around town, Cristin and I went back to her house to watch girly movies and just chill for a while. Of course, it would not be me and Cristin unless we watched "She's the Man." We also watched "The Holiday"...so good! Saturday we got up late and lounged for a while, watching another movie or two. Then we went to her cousin Laura's house to visit with her and her almost 2-year old, Charlotte. Charlotte was absolutely adorable! She was shy at first, but then we started playing and didn't stop for an hour and a half! It was very mellow and chill and just fun hanging out there. Makes me look forward to being a parent someday! After we left there, we went to Victoria Secret, and then Cristin introduced me to Sephora. "Hello beautiful store in which I could spend all of my money!" Fortunately for my wallet, I only got a couple of things that I completely didn't need but wanted anyway. (Duh.)

Saturday night, Cristin's dad cooked up some "real Memphis barbeque," including 2 butts and 3 chickens. Cristin's grandmother, aunt, and uncle came over, along with a few of Preston's friends, and it was a very good time. Her family is just so darn cute! Later that night, Cristin and I met her friend Jessica at a bar/restaurant called Sidestreet/Red Bar. It was a cool place with a great atmosphere. Another one of Cristin's friends, Karrie, works there, so we sat and hung out and laughed and sang until the place closed at 3 AM. It was a lot of fun, and it was great to meet Cristin's friends that she talks about all the time!

Sunday, we saw WICKED!!!!!! It was my second time to see the show, after seeing it for the first time in London. <3 This was Cristin's first time to see the show, but I didn't figure that out until the intermission when she was practically crying and hyperventilating and unbelievably happy! LOL. I was so glad I could be there for her first Wicked experience. It truly was phenomenal, and I hope I can see it again someday!

After eating more of Cristin's dad's barbeque and lounging in her family's pool for a few minutes, I made ready to start my journey back to Marshall County, Kentucky. After the Google Maps catastrophe that was me trying to get to Memphis, Cristin and I sat down and re-routed me to go a different way. A way I thought would have been easier. NOT. Google Maps screws me over again. I did alright though. For the most part, from Jackson, TN, to South Fulton, TN/KY, I was supposed to take Hwy 45 East going North. And I did. I took all of the necessary exits, kept heading in all the directions it told me. Then I looked over at the "Hey, this is the road you're on and the direction you're going" sign on the side of the road, and it said I was on Hwy 22 going North....wait, what? When did I get on Hwy 22?? And when did I get off of Hwy 45?? I double checked my directions to make sure that 22 and 45 hadn't merged for a little while. Nope. Nothing about Hwy 22 in my directions. AWESOME. I wasn't sure if I should turn around or keep going. I had just passed Martin, TN, which I was supposed to do, so I decided to get off at the next town exit to figure out where the hell I was. I drove for what seemed like hours but was actually only 10 miles before I came upon the next exit I was actually supposed to take according to Dear Old Google. So all was not lost, and neither was I. Thanks Google, that was a nice little prank you pulled--I HATE YOU. After that, it was smooth sailing all the way back into my driveway, thank God!

As stated previously, I love Cristin, but not the roads it takes to get there!

CHANGE OF PLANS:

My parents and brother and I have been planning a trip to Scottsboro, Alabama to visit the Unclaimed Baggage store. (Seriously, check out the link, it is the coolest place on earth!) We had planned on going this next weekend, the 17-19, but I think we're going to put it off until the end of the month, just in time for payday!

So, here is a list of coming events:
July 15: Harry Potter 6 comes out! But I may wait a few days to see it in order to miss all the insane teenagers and heavy crowds. Maybe Friday?
July 17-19: Relax at home!
July 24-26: Go to Owensboro to see Clay / Go to Holiday World!
July 31-Aug 2: Unclaimed Baggage
Aug 9-10: Staff Retreat for MSU office of recruitment
Aug 12: Rehearsal for ROC starts
Aug 19: classes start! I can't believe it!

Okay, I know you guys read this, so give me some comments!!!

Just a small town girl...

  • Jul. 7th, 2009 at 8:28 AM

So, I've grown up in a small town my entire life. Benton, KY only  has about 5,000-6,000 people living in it, and Murray has about 15,000 when the students are here. Paducah is a little bigger, but the majority of my time has been spent in Benton and Murray. Because I'm going to be working on my master's degree here at Murray, I'll still be around everything that I've grown up around. Nothing new, unless they build new buildings or something. But I really think I'm ready for something bigger.

I went to London, UK, for 12 days over the winter break this past year. Granted, I was only there for 12 days and was in a group doing touristy stuff most of the time. But the days that my friend Chris and I just kind of wandered around on our own, I loved it. Sure, it was below freezing outside most of the time, and the wind was so cold I could feel it cutting through my many layers of clothing. But I loved it. London was so different from everything I'd grown up in. The transportation system could take me easily wherever I wanted to go. I didn't have to spend money on gas and worry about traffic and parking and all the things that take the joy out of travel. I got to look out the windows of the bus and look at the different people on the tube and just enjoy being in a new place. There were countless free museums open until late at night. There were West End shows showing nearly every night. We hunted for cheap show tickets so we could have fun but still be able to eat more than potato chips and candy bars from the convenience store. We explored ancient cathedrals and tiny unique shops. We got the BEST hot chocolate in the world at a tiny cafe on Portobello Road. We ate some ridiculously good brownies and laughed out loud at each other when the sugar high hit. It was some of the best times in my life.

Of course, there were also some things I didn't love so much. On New Year's Eve, I was with Chris in a crowded square watching fireworks and the lights of the London Eye. At that point, I had only known Chris for 5 days. And I was surrounded by complete strangers in a foreign country. Usually on New Year's, I watch movies with my family and a few friends. We stay up til 12 talking and snacking and just enjoy being together until the new year officially begins. Sure, it doesn't sound very exciting, but that's what we do. Surrounded by thousands of people, I felt more alone than I had in most of my life. I missed my family and friends and Clay. But there were other things too. The tube could get so crowded that it scared me sometimes. I'm not claustrophobic or anything, but I like to be able to move and get off of a train if I need to, and sometimes I just had to move with the crowd.

In London, I encountered the first homeless people I had ever seen. I know they are just like me and most of them are just victims of a poor economy, but it broke my heart that they had nowhere to go except a building stoop or alley sidewalk. I know I'm just a naive girl from a small town in rural Kentucky, but I wish there was something I could do to help those people that I saw, and all the people in the world who are in that situation.

I look forward to moving to a new and different place when I go to school for my doctoral degree, but I know there will be pros and cons to any city I move to. I would love to go back to London someday for an extended stay, and I hope that someday God will let that happen.

Hey you. Today's title/subject comes from Gossip Girl, my latest obsession. Let's count them up... Let's see..I've read 8 (nearly finished with 9) books from the series, and I plan on finishing up the rest of the books (4) in the next week. It's a completely materialistic, girly book that lacks any sense of substance, but they are soooooo addicting! It's like a little soap opera for teens or something, except that if I had read this in high school, I would have been shocked. The seniors in high school in the book have sex with a different person in nearly every other chapter, and it makes me realize how naive I was in high school.

Hooray for the holiday weekend! Even though today is Thursday, it is my Friday because the university is closed tomorrow in observance of Independence Day this Saturday. Today is also exciting because it's ERIN'S BIRTHDAY!!!! She's been celebrating all night last night and all day today, but tonight I'm joining her and whoever else is there for dinner and fun in Paducah. Happy Birthday Erin!

Clay's family picnic is this Saturday in Hickman, and I'm really hoping it's as fun as it was 2 years ago. Now that I've gotten to know his family better, I will be a lot more at home there this year. His aunt cooks all kinds of delicious food practically by herself-- that woman is AMAZING. There's a pool to be enjoyed, a four-wheeler with a lot of open field to go with it, and Clay's family to enjoy the day with. I'm pretty sure we're going to see fireworks sometime Saturday night in Hickman, but I'm not sure. I hope so!

Next weekend is MEMPHIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AKA CRISTINNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I am so so so excited. Cristin, her new house, Memphis fun-to-be-had, and WICKED are making it a promising weekend.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AND HEY, LOOKEY HERE!!!!!!
Rachael is doing her first blog giveaway!! And it's extra-exciting because like Megan's giveaway last week, she's giving away an area rug that is too artsy and cute NOT to try to win. Keeping my fingers crossed! Check it out!

So sad, maybe you should buy a happy meal?

I do love Katy Perry. She is beautiful and funny and creative and amazering.

So, what has been going on in my life that might interest the population of internet browsers?

The family vaca to the Great Smoky Mountains was pretty fun.  I'll be honest, by the end of it, I wanted AWAY from certain family members, but all in all, it was pretty good. The mountains were absolutely breathtaking, as usual, and the cabin we stayed in was huge! <Seen Here>  It had 3 bedrooms, a loft, 2 full bathrooms, a living room, a den/pool room, a laundry room, full kitchen, dining room, and, most importantly, a HOT TUB! The hot tub was absolutely fabulous. I definitely want one when I get my own house.

While we were there we went to a place called Alewine Pottery. I fell in love with this store immediately. Robert Alewine, the owner, started the shop in 1983 and creates some of the most beautiful and simplistic pottery I've ever seen. I bought 2 small bowls and a mug for myself, a mug for Clay, and a small Rebekah pitcher for his parents. It was all so beautiful. They had a lovely dinnerware set there that I wanted but obviously did not have the funds for. It was a pure white with little speckles in it. Very simple and pure. I loved it.

The weekend after the vacation Clay and I went to Louisville. We went to the Louisville Zoo on Saturday, and it was soooo much fun! We saw lions and tigers, but no bears, so no "Oh my!" There were tigers, wolves, creepy gross spiders and snakes, baby giraffes and elephants, eagles, and of course tons of other animals. But there were ducks EVERYWHERE! They were literally inside almost every exhibit somewhere. They run the zoo, no doubt. After the zoo, we went to the Oxmoor Mall, which was decent. The Mall of St. Matthews seemed better, but we didn't get to spend much time in there. We went to dinner at a restaurant called the Irish Rover on Frankfort Ave. It was very authentic and delicious. It actually looked like some of the pubs that I went to in London, so I LOVED it. I ate these little fish cakes made out of salmon and cod, and man were they good! If Clay and I ever live in Louisville, this might have to become one of our regular food stops! :)

Something else exciting: Clay got me diamond earrings for our anniversary! They're absolutely beautiful. They're round-cut and 1/3 carat. Very nice, Clay! He shouldn't have gotten them for me, but I definitely did not refuse them!

Let's see... Last week was pretty uneventful. I worked all week, and then helped with my church's Vacation Bible School 3 nights last week. It wasn't so bad. I got to make fun crafts and play with my 1 year old cousin, Weston. He's too adorable! Don't you think?

He is tooooooooooo adorable. And so much fun!

Hm. Books update.
I've read 3 of the Gossip Girls books, plus the prequel. Only about 11 to go?  While I'm waiting for the next one to become available at the library, I'm reading "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies," courtesy of Robown. I'll probably start it tonight. Yay!

Upcoming events:
Tomorrow: Going to see "Transformers" and eat yummy Jasmine with my little brother! Aw.
This weekend: Clay is coming down for my Great-Grandmother's 85th birthday!
7/2/09 - Erin's birthday extravaganza
7/3/09 - MSU is closed, so I get the day off!
7/4/09 - Clay's family picnic
7/5/09 - Family activities in Hickman
7/10-12/09 - GO SEE CRISTIN FREAKIN FINALLY!!  AND SEE WICKED!! AND SEE CRISTIN!!!!!!!!
7/15/09 - *deep breath*... HAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRYYYYYYY POOOOOOOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR SIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX!

As you can see, we have many happy things to look forward to in the next three weeks!

Great Giveaway!

  • Jun. 22nd, 2009 at 8:33 AM

SomewhatVoluble is doing an incredible giveaway! It's a beautiful rug by CSN rugs. You should definitely check it out. The site has all kinds of rugs, from ones that could be used in classrooms to artsy rugs you could even hang on a wall. I heard about the giveaway via Rachie (see blog roll), and I'm muy excited about it. Even if I don't win, the rug site is incredible and definitely something I could spend some time on today, and maybe some money later? : )

I browsed the area rugs on the site, and you'll find my favorite below. It's gorgeous!

It's cadet grey and canary yellow, and hey! It's only $400! If you all want to go in together for a birthday present in September, I don't know if I could say no!

I know, I haven't updated in forever. I could use the excuse that I've had nothing to write about, but that just isn't true.  My BFFINTHEWHOLEWIDEWORLD Michael, who is in the Navy and stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, came home on Wednesday for a few days. He came over to my ouse that night and I didn't think I was ever going to stop hugging him.  I haven't seen him in over a year I think... He came home sometime last summer and I only got to see him once. He came over again on Friday to eat dinner with my family and I, and my parents made their locally famous TACOS! They, of course, were delicious. Saturday, Michael drove up to Owensboro with me so he and Clay could FINALLY meet! (I apologize for all of the OMGALLCAPS in this entry!) They got along a lot better than I expected, and Michael gave Clay the stamp of approval. (Aww...) Michael came to church and sat with my family on Sunday, and he left for Chicago to visit his brother almost immediately afterward. I hugged him about 3 or 4 times, and after he left, I just started sobbing. I know he'll be safe in his work in the Navy, but it sucks because I won't get to see him again until December at the earliest. He's leaving for his final Pacific deployment on June 15, which will last 6 months. During that time, I'll only hear from him via email, with maybe a call from Panama or Guam or something every now and then. Gah, I hate having my best friend so far away. The days he was here were just like high school. Us just hanging out and having fun. And now he's gone again. :(

::End of Jenny's pity party::

A lot of other happy things have happened lately too.  Of course, May 23rd was Nicole and Josh's wedding! The day went off without a hitch, and Nicole looked absolutely beautiful. The night before, several of the bridesmaids stayed at Emily's house because A) her house is conveniently located less than a mile from the venue, B) there were a few last-minute tasks we needed to finish, like cutting strings of silver pearls (Snickers helped), and C) to have one last girly hurrah before Ms. Nicole became a Mrs. A few of Emily's male friends came over to hang out, and we ended up playing a fun game with post-its on our head. (I'm too lazy to go into much detail today.)  The wedding itself went more smoothly than I've ever seen a wedding go.  I'm so happy for the new Mr. and Mrs. Nance!

In 4 days, I'm leaving with my family for a vacation in the Smoky Mountains. Eee! We're renting a GIANT condo, complete with a jacuzzi and mountain views, lol. After all the hectic craziness and stress of this past semester and then starting work and wedding events right away, I'm definitely in need of a getaway. Unfortunately, my family and I are leaving on Clay and I's 2-year anniversary.  Oh well, we're celebrating BIG next weekend.

Our anniversary plans are as follows: Louisville Zoo, for sure. As far as other events, we're at a complete loss to know what to do. I've gotten a few suggestions from friends, and Clay and I just need to talk about it and decide what exactly we want to do, or want to have the option to do. Any ideas from you guys????

Last, but not least, I LOVE YOU CRISTIN! Thanks for reminding me about my blog, lol.

UPDATE!

  • May. 14th, 2009 at 9:14 AM

Yesterday, as boredom consumed our office, I read most of

and finished it last night.

My next adventure will be to attempt to read

which I have tried to read several times, but I've failed thus far. But I am determined to finish it this time because I would like to appreciate my next read to the fullest extent:

Looks magnificent, no?  Robyn got it for her birthday and is going to let me borrow it after she finishes it. Hooray!

Other than my nerdy book obssessions, I have no real news. Leaving for vacation with my family in a little over 3 weeks. Clay and I are celebrating our 2 year anniversary the weekend after that....

How could I forget??  GREY'S WITH CRISTIN TONIGHT!  Granted, it won't be as good as watching it in Regents 905 screaming at the tv, but we'll be screaming at our own tv's while on the phone with each other.  I'm sure that tomorrow I will be VERY mad at ABC. I'm sure the cliffhanger tonight will drive me nuts.

EDIT:: I did get the Blackberry Curve a week ago yesterday, and I love love LOVE it! Texting is so much easier, and I have the email/internet package on there right now, and I think I'm going to start giving my parents money so we can keep it on there. It's kind of addicting.

Okay, back to reality (oh, there goes gravity)....

Big News Folks!  I graduated from college! I graduated MSU on Saturday, May 9, 2009. Me, Robyn, and Cristin all sat together in the back with the other Honors Kids. After listening to a bunch of speeches attempting to inspire us (except for Meg Black's- she wasn't boring) and Reed Clapp make an absolute FOOL of himself (seriously, worst speech I've ever heard), we got up to do our little jaunt across the stage. We walked up the length of the floor and arrived quickly at the stage. Up until this point, I have to admit that I was less than stoked about graduating. I just didn't really feel like I had graduated. After all, I'm going to be going to Murray in the fall for my master's anyway. But when we started lining up next to the stage, I realized,  "This is it!" I was graduating college officially in a matter of seconds. I got up to the stage, and they announced my name as I walked across the stage to receive my fake diploma from Dr. Dunn. By the time I got to him, I realized I had a huge smile on my face. I looked up to my family, who were sitting directly in front of me, and just beamed. I could not have done anything without the support of my family. It was wonderful to look up and see my mom, dad, mamaw and papaw, Mama Dot, Aunt Judy, my brother, and Clay. I love them all so very much. As I walked off the stage, Dr. Lucko came up and hugged me. It was so touching! I pretty much skipped down to my seat again. After Robyn and Cristin got back, we had a photo shoot with Robyn's camera. It was fabulous. Hopefully those pictures will be online soon!

Really, compared to graduation, not much else has happened.  I moved out of the dorm for the last time. The dorms were fun to live in, but I'm glad to be out.  It'll be nice having my own place in the fall. Clay came to my house after he got done on Saturday and we hung out with my family for a while.  I'm not really sure when I'll see him again.  Maybe next weekend. That'll be the weekend of Nicole's wedding, so hopefully he'll be able to come down for that. If not, I'll go see him the next weekend. That will be one week before our anniversary.

I guess technically now I'm a grown up.  I mean, I've graduated from college. Isn't that when people are considered grown-ups these days? Maybe we can push that title back for a few more years...

And here's another piece of life-shattering-but-not-necessarily-life-ending news: I am now a 32 DDD. As in DDDAMN! It's no wonder my clothes don't fit anymore. My next big purchase will be a bikini that actually fits.

Hm. I think that's all. I'm sure I'll be blogging a lot more now that school is over.  I'm also going to be reading a crap-ton. I've already read:

And I plan on reading the rest of the series this summer. I haven't bought the second book yet, so in the meantime I'm reading:

I read A&D my senior year of high school, and I don't really remember much except that it was a STELLAR book, so I figured, why not.  Especially before the movie comes out. I know the movie won't be as good as the book, but I still want to see it and see some of the images in my mind come to life.

Ok, this entry is GIANT. Love you all!

World Peace!

Clue to the title: I'm watching "Miss Congeniality 2" <3

First of all, the Katy Perry concert was FANTASTIC!  Cristin and I headed to Nashville after I got out of class on Tuesday. We got to the venue, the Cannery Ballroom at the Mercy Lounge, at about 5:30, and there was already about 65 people standing in line.  The doors opened at 6:30, and the opening band started playing at 7:30. There were two people next to us in line, Jamison and Whitnee, and we absolutely fell in love with them.  They were one of the cutest couples I had ever seen! Cristin and I had made our own Katy Perry shirts Monday night, and they looked absolutely gorgeous. (No worries, pictures to follow!) We found out that the opening act was The Daylights, a band made up of three HOT guys, two of which were twins. *swoon* For reals, ya'll, they were delish. Cristin and I were able to get pretty close to the stage and had a great time, despite the crazy bitches that were all around us.  Let me introduce you.  Cristin was standing on my right, and on my left was boy-who-literally-passes-out-on-top-of-people.  Yes, he literally passed out.  Not as annoying as the person to my front-left. May I introduce crazy-older-bitch-who-dresses-like-she-is-17-but-is-actually-probably-closer-to-40-and-dances-like-she's-the-only-person-in-the-room. (A long nickname, I know, but I really can't shorten it.) This bitch was literally elbowing me in the face and bumping me with her nasty hip in her tiny little tank top all. night. long. There were points I did want to just deck the girl in the face. Ok, moving on. In front of us was a crazy bitch who almost got thrown out for pushing people and just generally being a loud mouth. Cristin and I were begging security to throw her out. Directly in front of us, separating us from Loud Mouth Bitch, was Overly Publicly Affectionate Couple, starring Ugly 18 year old girl and Fat, Tall Guy who loves to stand directly in both mine and Cristin's way (yes, he was that big).  It's funny.  He actually hit us with his nasty butt every time he leaned over to kiss his girlfriend's neck, whisper nasty things I'm glad I never heard, and anything else.  It was disgusting.

But Katy was incredible!  She was so funny adorable.  I think I fell in love with her even more!  Here are some pictures to prove it!

Our shirts!

We are too adorable.

Our new friends, Jamison and Whitnee, from WKU.

Our fake "OMGIT'SKATY!" faces.

The DAYLIGHTS. Obviously we didn't take this picture.  But it shows you that they are GORGEOUS.

Our real "OMGIT'SKATY" faces!!!!!

KAAAAAAATYYYYYYYYYY!

AND KATY AGAIN IN A PINK LEAPARD UNI.  <3<3<3<3<3

Ok, anyway.

Other news, I finished the first complete draft of my thesis today. YAY!

Emily's dance company performance was this past weekend, and they did wonderfully.  I really do think it was the best show I had seen since I've started going.  I'm so proud of you Emily!

"I see a busy week in your future..."
Scholars Week presentation this week.
Finish my thesis by Thursday.
Present defense on Monday the 27th.
ROBYN'S BIRTHDAY TOMORROW!!  HAPPY 22ND!
Clay's karate competition is this weekend.  I can't go, but I wish him the very best of luck!  I'm so proud of him.  He's come so far.  I'm sure he'll do great this weekend.

I'm so ready for May 10th to come around.  And yet, at the same time, I don't want this time in my life to end.  My life is about to change completely.  I'm about to "grow up," as society puts it.

Alright, time for bed.  Love you all!

Cristin: only a few days left!  We can do it!
Rachie: I hope you start feeling better soon!  You're in my thoughts and prayers.
Robyn: Happy Birthday!
Emily: I lowve yow! And I LOVED "The Garden"
Erin: I need to see you soon!
Katharina: Looking forward to catching up on  your blog tomorrow!  lol.

Everyone else: love you!

So, May 2, 2009, I am eligible for a free phone upgrade.  I went to Wal-Mart a couple days ago and started looking at the phones that they had available with a 2-year renewal contract.  I was kind of torn between the samsung propel and the blackberry curve (in red), and after looking at the specifications, etc. online, I've decided what I want........

And our winner is....THE BLACKBERRY CURVE!
I'm rationalizing this purchase, which will only be $20 with a 2-year service renewal, for the following reasons:
-It has a longer battery life than the propel.
-It has the pearl, so I can scroll. :)
-It will LAST a while.
-Because it will last a while, if I want to start using for work (with my GA position) in the fall, I'll be able to.
-President Obama loved his so much he refused to give it up.
-It's a pretty red color.
-I'm used to Clay's blackberry pearl, so it won't take me long to get used to it.
-QWERTY keyboard
-My friend Mallory has one, and I like hers a lot.
-Brickbreaker, which I look forward to getting addicted to!

HOORAY!

But, along with the phone, I also want a case.  Clay has a case that helps preserve his battery life, and his battery sometimes lasts for 3 days.  My case would look like this:

Sleek and pretty AND functional.  Yay!  I might even BEDAZZLE it....

It is decided.  The next time I'm in the computer lab with those two idiots from my previous entry, I'M GOING OFF ON THOSE BITCHES.  They sit there and talk and talk and talk and talk and talk about stupid shit while other people are trying to work on various assignments, like their SENIOR THESIS THAT DETERMINES WHETHER THEY GRADUATE OR NOT.  They don't even use the computers that they're sitting at.  Why can't they go somewhere else?  There's a conference room right next door that hardly anyone is ever in.  The weather has been lovely in general lately, so they could go outside.  There's another lounge on the 1st floor where they could sit and gab.  SERIOUSLY??!?  Why do they have to talktalktalktalktalktalktalktalk in an environment in which others are trying to work????

Next, an elaboration on a brief announcement I made in my last entry.  My friend Rachael has her own blogging site, and she has created blogs for our friends Emily and Robyn, and she's making one for our friend Erin right now.  And guess who's next....... ME!  I have secretly been dying to have Rachael design a layout for me, and now my dreams are coming true.  Hopefully I'll get all moved this summer.  If Rachael's schedule is anything like mine, she probably won't have time to do it before then.  But I'm perfectly ok with that.  :)

Can you guys tell I'm excited?  lol.

And to finish up, here are a few photos from spring break 2009 in Destin, FL...

The view of the sunset from our balcony.

The tiny baby sand dollar I found!  ...And broke the next day.

The Pale Force invades the beach!  I love this picture.  Obviously, it's me and Clay.

A Few Quick Bits...

  • Apr. 7th, 2009 at 3:10 PM

1.  I hate the two bitches that sit in the psych computer lab and TALKTALKTALKTALKTALK at normal voice levels EVERY Tues/Thurs afternoon.  For real.  GO FUCKING OUTSIDE.  Today it's just me in here, but they've done it when it's full too.  Dumb underclassmen.  I WILL KILL THEM.

2.  KATY PERRY CONCERT IS A WEEK FROM TODAY!  Seriously, a week from RIGHT NOW, I will be in a car with Cristin, heading to Nashville, squealing because I'm so excited.

3.  Springer-Franklin is including the song "Beat It" in our All Campus Sing repetoire (sp?), and I love it.  It looks great.  Check us out on April 22!

4.  I will be leaving livejournal sometime in the near future to join Rachie on her site!  This is awesome for me.  I love her designs, and I'd love to help her harem grow.

5.  I WILL SERIOUSLY KILLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL  THE PEOPLE I MENTIONED IN #1.

That's what she told ME to do!

  • Apr. 3rd, 2009 at 12:35 PM

Ok, so the past week has been quite eventful.  Let's get to it.

Last weekend was Emily's birthday-celebration-bouffant-and-crazy-outfit-EXTRAVAGANZA!  Despite a little bit of drama, it was a really fun time.  Just for the occasion, I put a pink streak in my hair!  I'll have pictures up as soon as I get them!  There was a lot of dye left after I did mine, so Emily died the underneath part of her hair pink as well.  The only trouble is that you can't see it unless she has her hair up in a ponytail, so it's like a surprise!  We partied at Robyn's for a little while, walked to Vitello's in our stellar outfits, went to the bathroom in Johnson theater...where Emily and Lauren did a special dance to a song from "The Little Mermaid"...and then we went over to Lauren's house to chill in the hot tub.  It was a lot of fun.

This week has been pretty quiet.  I've written my literature review and methods section for my thesis, and hopefully I'll finish my data collection next week.

The Katy Perry concert in Nashville with Cristin is only 11 days away!!!  I'm already sooooooooooooo excited!  [[Cristin!  We need to make shirts!]]

Ok, can't keep it to myself any longer.  I found out today that I have been accepted into the master's psychology program here at Murray State!  I walked into the office today, and in their outgoing mail box were a stack of letters with one addressed to me on top.  I asked the secretary, "So, if one of these letters has my name on it, can I take it?"  She said yes and laughed.  She already knew what was inside.  I was fairly confident that I was going to be accepted, but it's nice to know for sure.  Now, I just have to find jobs for this summer and the fall so I can get an apartment as soon as possible!

Today has been a mix of good and bad.
-Woke up early this morning: bad.
-Left Franklin, running late for my research study: bad.
-Dropped my phone on the way out of Franklin and cracked my phone's screen: BAD.
-Got to my research and had a whopping 3 participants: bad.
-GOT MY LETTER OF ACCEPTANCE FOR THE MASTER'S PROGRAM!: GOOD!!!!
-Received my monthly bonus: bad.

Really, today has been all bad with the incredible good of my acceptance news thrown in.  An odd recipe, but it tastes good.  Take the bad with the good, I suppose!

I'll leave you with some of my favorite pictures from London...

The famous red phone booths...filled with porn ads.

The tube station closest to our hotel in Mayfair.  I miss it!

Looking through a cross-shaped window at the top of Warwick Castle.

Trafalgar Square, with Big Ben in the background.

My friend Chris and I on our last night in London, about to go see WICKED!!!

Love you all!

I R not ded.

Hello!!!!!!  I am back from spring break and back to the blogging world.  There's a lot to catch up, so away we go!

1.  GRADUATE ADMISSION APPLICATION ETC.    I turned in all of my application materials and all that jazz to the graduate admissions office and the psychology department on the Friday before spring break.  My GRE scores should have gotten there by now as well.  I'm fairly confident that I will get into the program because A) I'm a strong academic candidate, B) I had 3 very strong recommendation letters and C) one of the recommendation letters was from the chair of the psychology department, so she basically sent a letter to herself.  The only thing I'm nervous about is my personal statement because I kind of threw it together on the fly and really only spent a day or two on it.  But I also included my personal resume with the application, and a lot of the psychology faculty know me personally.  So really, I'm 95% confident that I will get in.  I'm just a little anxious.

2.  SPRING BREAK 2009.     So Friday night at approximately 11:30pm, I and 8 other people (Clay, Gator, Heather, Casey, Brandon, Chris, Nick, and Mallory) piled into two cars --miraculously with all of our luggage contained in the two trunks-- and headed south to Destin, Florida.  We wanted to drive overnight so we could get there as soon as possible on Saturday.  Usually I don't sleep at all in cars, but apparently I was exhausted because I slept for about 4 hours.  Clay and I rode with Heather and Gator in Heather's new Pontiac G6.  It was a nice roomy car, so I couldn't complain.  Destin itself was absolutely beautiful.  We stayed at a really nice resort that had a tram to take us to the beach and a few restaurants, so we took advantage of that as much as we could.  The first day we went to the beach there were hardly any waves at all.  The water was crystal clear blue and green, and cold.  But once our extremeties went numb, it was great!  The second day we went to the beach the waves were pretty active.  They were at least a couple feet high.  It was fun to just play around and not have to worry about anything but putting on sunscreen.  Thursday morning, Clay and I got up at 6am and went to the beach to look for shells and sand dollars.  The tide had come in and gone out that night, so there were shells everywhere!  We got there just in time to see the sunrise, and there will be pictures on here hopefully by the end of the week.  Of course, the whole break wasn't bliss.  There was a lot of couple drama that went on, and if you're lucky, you'll get to hear me tell the stories in person.  They aren't quite appropriate to post on here.  We came back the next Friday.  LONGEST CAR RIDE OF MY LIFE.

3.  ETC.  Sunday, I participated in the Dying Emily's Hair Various Shades of Blonde Extravaganza, and it was great to just hang out with Emily and Robyn and dye hair and watch "Stick It."  It was like a flashback to our sophomore year!

I've decided I'm going to put a pink streak in my hair!!!!  I've always wanted to, and really, this is the only time in my life that I can.  I'll use temporary dye, so it will probably only be around for a week or two, so it'll be gone by graduation.

I don't really know what else to write, except that I've missed blogging.  I'm sure I'll blog about more interesting and shorter things later!

Preview of the rest of my week:
-I need to write my lit review and methods section by next Monday
-I need to find a cheap vintage dress for...
-FRIDAY: EMILY'S BIRTHDAY EXTRAVAGANZA!
-Working the desk sometime Saturday and Sunday
-Sunday: Nicole's bridal shower and Slumdog Trillionaire (Billionaire for me) in Paducah at Maiden Alley?

I've got a lot more to do than that, but those are the main events.

And now, I leave you with this:

PS: Emily and Robyn-- dramatic reading of geremy's letter this weekend?  Please say yes!

EXCITING EDIT!!!!
So I'm sitting here at work in Sparks, and my boss, Shawn, pulled me into his office.  He asked what my plans were for next year, and as I mentioned before, hopefully I'll be a grad student here.  We talked, and he said that the office really wanted to hire me as a graduate assistant and for a summer position as well.  YAY!!!!  I'm not sure how much money is involved, but if I could somehow pull in $600 a month or so, that would be perfect!  HOORAY!
